Wilmington, Delaware

Environmental Overview:

Wilmington is the largest city in the state of Delaware. It has adopted several environmental protection measures, including a city-wide recycling program and an urban forestry program. In the early 2000s, the City of Wilmington partnered with the Riverfront Development Corporation to revitalize the Christina River by encapsulating the river’s shoreline soil, which had been polluted by hundreds of years of industrial use. The project qualified for a federal Brownfields grant because of its goal to clean up industrial pollution at the site. The riverfront now serves as a biking and walking space, and also offers a refuge for local wildlife.

Wilmington Recycling Program:

Wilmington has a city recycling program in place, administered by the Delaware Solid Waste Authority. The program provides for recycling of plastics, metal, paper, and glass products.
